Can you share a bit about your journey into basketball ? What sparked your passion for the sport, and how has your path to becoming a professional player been so far?
My journey into basketball began at a young age. Growing up in Latvia, sports were always a part of my life, because untill 7th grade I also went to ballroom dancing and swimming practices regularly but it was basketball that truly captured my heart. And how could it not have if everyone in my family has played basketball at some point in their lives. I was inspired by watching national team games, seeing how players could influence the game with their skills and teamwork. The more I played, the more I fell in love with the sport. My path to becoming a professional has been challenging but incredibly fun. I’ve had to put in a lot of hard work, from early morning practices to intense training sessions, but every step has been worth it as I continue to grow as a player.
What does representing Latvia in basketball mean to you ? How do you view the role of basketball in Latvian sports culture ?
Representing Latvia is an immense honor for me. Wearing the national team jersey is something I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid. Basketball holds a special place in Latvian sports culture, and it’s a sport that brings people together. The pride and support from family motivate me to give my best every time I step on the court. I believe basketball is one of the pillars of Latvian sports, and being a part of that legacy is something I want to achieve one day. **How would you describe your playing style?** I’d describe my playing style as versatile and team-oriented. I focus on both ends of the court, contributing on offense with scoring and creating opportunities for my teammates, while also being a strong presence on defense. The ability to dribble the ball and shoot it at my height allow's me to play inside and outside, and I’m always working on improving my game in all areas, whether it’s shooting, ball-handling, or defending multiple positions.
What are your main goals in your basketball career, both in the short term and long term ? Where do you envision yourself in the next several years ?
In the short term, my goal is to continue improving and to help my team achieve success in the Latvian league. I also want to make an impact in international competitions with the Latvian national team. Long term, I aspire to play at the highest level possible, whether that’s in Europe or even the NBA. In the next several years, I see myself growing into a key player for my teams, constantly evolving and pushing myself to reach new heights.
How do you structure your training sessions? Are there any specific drills or routines that are essential to your preparation ?
My training sessions are structured to balance skill development and physical conditioning. A typical session might start with warm-ups and stretching, followed by drills focused on shooting, ball-handling, and footwork. I also spend a lot of time on defensive drills and strength training.
Mental toughness is crucial in sports. How do you work on maintaining your focus and composure during high-pressure situations ?
Mental toughness is something I work on daily. I practice mindfulness and visualization techniques to stay focused and composed, especially during high-pressure moments. I also rely on my preparation—knowing that I’ve put in the work gives me confidence. During games, I try to stay in the moment, focusing on the task at hand rather than the outcome. This approach helps me stay calm and perform under pressure.
When you’re not on the court, what do you enjoy doing ? Are there any hobbies or activities that help you relax and recharge ?
Off the court, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I also like to play beach volleybally a lot, travel or just play some board games. These activities help me relax and recharge, giving me a break from the intensity of basketball. I believe it’s important to have balance in life, and these hobbies provide that for me.
What’s your take on the current state of basketball in Europe, particularly in the Baltic region ? How do you see the competition evolving in the near future ?
Basketball in Europe, and especially in the Baltic region, is growing. The level of competition is high, with many talented players and teams pushing each other to get better. I see the competition continuing to evolve, with more focus on developing young talent and integrating advanced training techniques. The future of basketball here is bright, and I’m excited to be a part of it.
What advice would you offer to young Latvian players who aspire to follow in your footsteps and make it in professional basketball ?
My advice to young players would be to stay dedicated and work hard every day. Focus on improving your skills, but also take care of your body and mind. Be patient, as success doesn’t come overnight, but with persistence and passion, you can achieve your goals. Surround yourself with positive influences and always believe in your abilities.
Do you have any aspirations outside of basketball? Whether in sports or other areas.
Outside of basketball, I’m interested in furthering my education and exploring opportunities in business. I believe it’s important to have a well-rounded life and to prepare for life after basketball. I’m also passionate about giving back to the community, particularly in ways that can inspire and help young athletes pursue their dreams.
